Erie Rail Terminal
The Erie Rail Terminal is being developed by DevelopErie and private investor-operators to provide new intermodal rail service to the Erie region. The developers are working with CSX on terminal design and service.
The Terminal is located in Harborcreek Township, just east of the city of Erie, Pennsylvania. This long, flat and narrow site is ideal, providing 4,000 feet of frontage on the CSX mainline track and easy access to US Route 20 and PA Route 955. It will require construction of five miles of new railroad track, truck parking and loading areas, road improvements, gate controls, security and lighting. These improvements, along with cranes and other equipment, will cost approximately $60 million.
The Terminal will improve the Erie region's trade links. It will provide the existing manufacturing, agriculture and timber industries with daily container service to New York City and connecting service to dozens of cities and ports through the CSX hub in northwest Ohio. It will also help Erie attract businesses that depend upon international shipping and trade.
Terminal design and permitting is underway, with construction beginning in the fall of 2014. The Erie Rail Terminal will be open for business in early 2016.
